THE ANIMALS PAGES

THE ANIMALS PAGES. In view of my failure, I proceeded to examine the dog. I heard that he had not lost his appetite, but I was amazed at the violence of the cough which had a peculiar and striking characteristic. In breathing out, the dog emptied his lungs of air very thoroughly and his breath produced within his chest a very loud noise resembling that of a saw used for sawing up tough wood.

A CENTURY OF MEDICAL DISGRACE

A CENTURY OF MEDICAL DISGRACE. In his presidential address, Lord Dawson of Penn described in eloquent and resounding sentences the progress of medicine in the course of the last century. It is true vast changes have taken place. Patients are no longer bled to death, nor are they tortured by vigorous blistering, burning with red hot irons, huge doses of mercury, which were given until the unfortunate sufferers spat out their teeth, etc.

FOOD AND HEALTH

FOOD AND HEALTH. There is a group of scientific dieticians, and I belong to that group, who believe that the great consumption of flesh protein and egg protein is apt to poison the organs of digestion, the bowel tract, liver, kidneys and the veins and arteries. We cannot as yet decide whether this poisoning takes place directly through the disintegration of these proteins, or indirectly through the poisons produced by micro-organisms of the bowel.

MIRACLES DONE BY GELSEMIUM AND PETROLEUM

MIRACLES DONE BY GELSEMIUM AND PETROLEUM. IN my early years of practice we had to treat many cases of typhoid fever, now rare in New York City. What a remedy we had in Gelsemium! The weakness, the stupor, the trembling, etc., characterised the symptoms presented by a large majority of patients. I often wonder what I would do with the majority of my cases of influenza without this wonderful polychrest. It is no less useful for an ordinary nasal cold, with congested turbinates making breathing difficult. Later there is a thin watery discharge.

THE HOME MEDICINE CHEST

THE HOME MEDICINE CHEST. Aconite in its crude form of tincture is a poison; used in the homoeopathic form of dilution or potencies it is a very valuable medicine. To many of you it is probably known as very useful in fevers, but it is by no means the only remedy for feverish states. Many other homoeopathic medicines are indicated for such conditions according to the symptoms presented by the patient.
