George G Harrap
Messrs. George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., have published at IOS. 6d a book by Dr. Rasmus Alsaker, entitled The Master Key to Health. It is a noteworthy and significant publication. Orthodox doctors in increasing numbers are revolting against the present mania of treating diseases with dangerous insufficiently proved remedies, with subcutaneous injections, with Radium, which often causes cancer, and with mutilation. In America many doctors who have passed the orthodox examinations describe themselves as drugless doctors, or as doctors who use no drugs, no injections and no surgery. They rely on natural means alone.
Dr. Alsaker, the Director of the Sun-Diet Health Foundation, has written the above-mentioned volume which proclaims his faith in Nature Cure. Nature Cure is undoubtedly very potent, especially if it is reinforced by homoeopathic medication, which is infinitely safer than orthodox treatment. The extract printed will give readers a fair idea of the character and the teaching of this interesting volume – Editor “HEAL THYSELF”.
The poorest food offered to the public is highly refined white sugar. Yes, it is very nourishing. It digests easily and within the body it creates a plentiful amount of heat and energy. If we go no further, we have to admit that white sugar is a most excellent food because it does nourish. But a food should do more than nourish, and that is where white sugar falls down completely.
All good foods should do two things: they should nourish the body and they should help to maintain and build health. White sugar does the first, but it has nothing to do with maintain and build health. White sugar does the first, but it has nothing to do with maintaining and building health. White sugar is as completely dead as any food can be. It is devitalized.
It is merely carbon, as pure as it can be obtained in that form, mixed with a little water. It contains no natural mineral salts and it has no vitamins and not one of the elements that we think of in health building. Furthermore, white sugar and all products containing it tend to pervert the taste so that the individual will not eat enough of foods containing the mineral salts, the cleansing juices and the vitamins.
One very bad habit is to add white sugar to almost every dish containing starch and to almost every drink. This should be discontinued. The bowl containing white sugar should be left off the table. It is a very poor food and the less we use of it the better off we are. The problem is to get vital foods into the body so as to counteract hyperacidity and the growing tendency for the body to become more and more acid with advancing years. Sugar helps to make the acidity worse and hence should be banned.
Men and women who consume large amounts of candy soon get so that they do not care for a sufficient quantity of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables. Then the blood becomes inferior, and so does the entire body, including the bones and the teeth. Yes, the hard parts o the body are as dependent on the blood stream as are muscles, nerves and other tissues.
The action of sugar in causing deterioration of the body is indirect. A piece of candy or a piece of loaf sugar does not directly poison anyone, but when a person eats much sugar, an appetite is created for more and more of the artificial sweets and in this way the desire for wholesome food is partly destroyed, and with that destruction goes some of the individuals health. We need vital food to build good bodies, and sugar completely lacks life.
Some will make the objection that human beings not only crave sugar, but need sugar. To this our reply is that white sugar was unknown until a few centuries ago. Three hundred years ago when the Virgin Queen ruled England sugar was an expensive drug and considered a cure-all.
It was known as Indian salt because the scanty supply came from India. In those days the populace had no sugar to consume. White sugar is not a necessity. It can be eaten in moderation without causing any trouble, but the difficulty is that those who eat sugar take too much of it.
Sugar is especially bad for children because they are not only in need of nourishment but of substances to furnish material for growth, so as to develop soundly and normally for the future. Consequently they should have the very best of building materials. The best building materials for children are the natural foods, the foods that give life and strength and energy and endurance. They need foods, not only to build good muscle and fine nerve and excellent brain tissue, but for the best of bone material and teeth.
Surely, most children love sweet foods, but it is just as easy to train them to eat raisins, thoroughly ripe bananas, dates, figs, Santa Clara prunes and other natural foods that are rich in sugar as it is to teach them to partake of white sugar, pie and cake. It is much more profitable to give them the natural foods. If concentrated sweets are wanted, give them honey or maple sugar. These sweets contain the natural salts and consequently help to make good tissue. They also help to maintain healthful balance of the body, which white sugar tends to make the body acid, and acidity causes disease.
When children are given much white sugar, and consequently fail to eat plentifully of fresh fruits and vegetables, they have a tendency to fall ill with adenoids, rickets, catarrh and other diseases due to faulty nutrition. They also are more subject to worms than children who are fed properly. By the way, little has been said to late years on the subject of worms.
A vast proportion of our child population is infected with worms, at least a part of the time. These children develop that peculiar pinched, whitish look under the nose, and they become very nervous and have peculiar cravings, and one of the things they crave is candy or sugar in some other form. Please note that this is an abnormal craving to suit the irritation due to a diseased condition.
Is sugar any better for adults than for children? No, but adults have their full growth and are not so easily injured by wrong feeding as are the little people. However, when a child who has been accustomed to an excessive amount of candy and white sugar grows up, he craves such artificial sweets as pie, cake, pudding, cookies and other sweet mixtures such as jelly, jam, preserves and marmalade.
Another danger in over eating of sugar is to make the blood stream so acid that diabetes develops. Diabetes is generally the result of too generous eating of sweet mixtures and starch. Starch and sugar are closely related. You can realize how close this affinity is when you think of the scientific fact that in the human body all starches turn to sugar in the process of digestion. Starch, as starch, cannot be used by the human body, but sugar can be utilized to produce heat and energy and fat.
