SOME REMEDIES FOR MENORRHAGIA

In those cases of shock usually due to loss of much blood, with profound collapse, coldness, sweating and smothering with desire to be fanned, there are two remedies that are life savers- Carb. veg. and China. If one knows the previous history of menstruation, it will help to differentiate these remedies. In Carb. veg. the menses are premature and profuse, of pale blood, or thick with a pungent smell.

(From The Hahnemannian Gleanings).

HOMOEOPATHY offers wonderful curative results in many menstrual disturbances-but not for all cases. All these patients should have a careful local examination. Sometimes cancers are found. Here internal medication does not cure. I have operated many of these cases and the final results are not very good. Many have had a return in fifteen months up to several years. One remained “cured” for twelve years before the cancer returned. For the past six years, I have lost my enthusiasm for surgical operations on these unfortunate patients. I now turn them over to the radium expert. The results seem to be somewhat more promising.

Then in some patients we have discovered non-malignant cystic disease of the cervix. Here the hot iron is the curative agent. The so-called cervical laceration in many cases is cured by the same treatment. Bleeding from internal fibroid many times can be relieved by the homoeopathic remedy but the tumor is not cured. We may also discover uterine polypi. I have had three cases of this kind, and they were all cured by Calc. carb. The tumours were extruded from the uterus. The patients became normal – one for more than twenty years.

In strict menorrhagia the homoeopathic remedy is the proper curative treatment.

Calc. carb. – This is the remedy for those patients who are constitutionally weak, tired, no physical or mental stamina, and are flabby. The menstrual flow is profuse and protracted. The colour is usually bright red, but at times it is slight coloured. These patients are usually cold, but get hot on slight exertion.

Calc. phos. – These patients are a good deal for the same type as Calc. carb., but are not so flabby. They are thinner and more alert. Menstruation is too early in young girls with discharge of bright blood. In adults the flow is at first bright red but soon becomes dark.

Phosphorus. – This patient is chilly but flushes up on excitement. She is mentally alert (opposite of the Calcareas) but tired physically. The flow is too early, too profuse and of too long duration. The Phosphorus patient is a bleeder. At times they vomit blood instead of menstruating.

Sabina – Menses too early and too profuse, and flows mostly in paroxysms. The flow is either bright red or dark and clotted. The mental make-up is like Puls. The latter remedy is very apt to increase the flow and not give relief as does Sabina.

Bovista – The menstruation is apt to be too profuse and is always worse in bed or only when in bed. Pains from back to pubis.

Crocus – Menstruation is profuse and black, with clotting and formation of long black strings. Mental symptoms alternate, either cheerful or depressed.

Actaea racemosa – These patients are hysterical in type. There are twitchings and spasms. Thinks she will go insane. Pains shoot from side to side and down front of the thigh with profuse menstruation. Sometimes they vomit with the pain.

Nux vomica – Is a cantankerous patient with profuse menstruation, coming too early and lasting too long. The mental symptoms come at the onset and remain till the flow is over.

Chamomilla – Is cross, ugly, spiteful and snobbish. The flow is dark, coagulated blood flowing in paroxysms.

Cyclamen – Is indicated in anaemic or chlorotic women. Menses profuse, black membranous and clotted, with labour-like pains from back to pubis. The flow is less on moving about. A chilly patient.

Secale – This is for scrawny women with cold extremities. Continued oozing of this foetid, watery blood. The patient may be cold, but is aggravated by heat. Cant stand to be covered.

Ustilago maydis – The flow is profuse, dark and foul smelling, fluid blood in gushes intermingled with small dark clots. The uterus is flabby and dilated. This remedy is a good deal like Secale but in the latter the uterus is hard and the os is tightly closed.

These are the principal remedies for menorrhagia but still there are about 125 other remedies which may be curative in this condition.

In state of “shock” due to miscarriage or labour, the patient wants to be fanned very vigorously. In China the menses are profuse, of dark coagulated blood, or may be pale but always clotted. In state of shock due to the above causes, patient wants to be fanned very gently.

Ipecacuanha. – The menses are profuse, flooding, bright red blood, readily coagulating. There are symptoms that point to “shock”. The distinguishing feature is the unremitting nausea.
