Six doctors have already been appointed and eight lakhs of rupees have been received from private contribution and double the amount has been promised. The situation appears to be hopeful. But we do not congratulate Dr. Roy now. It is too early to do so. Promises, schemes and plans we have had enough in the past. At times we had been flooded with them. But how many of them have been actually carried into practice?

The following excerpt is taken from Amrita Bazar Patrika of Wednesday the 2nd June 1948:-

“We welcome the announcement made by Dr.B.C.Roy, Premier of West Bengal, that every Union Board will have a full-fledged health centre with four beds in charge of a fully qualified doctor by September or October next. Dr. Roy further said that he had already started work to establish 640 Union health centres of four beds each and 60 thana health centres with fifty beds each. This net-work of hospitals, which will cost Rs. 2 crores and 20 lakhs, will try to reach medical aid to every citizen of the province of West Bengal.

But how many of them have been actually carried into practice? We would remind the Premier that there is no more time for plans and promises. People are anxious to have something more, they want something more, they want something tangible”.
