OUTSIDE THE ROUTINE

The symptom on which I based my faith in Adaxukah was an intense feeling of exhaustion in the morning, better after getting around a little. It was a left over from the old cord condition but there were so many Adaxukah colds about at the time that I was curious to try the remedy. But at last report the “keynote” symptom had not changed.

CASE 1. When an eczema comes that appears like the Graphites condition, yellow, scaly, powdery, sticky yellow discharge, deep painful cracks, compare Dysentery. Here is an instance; man, dorsa of hands; had been rayed and had had other topical attentions, four years duration, no occupational causation. Graphites, Tuberculinum, Manganum aceticum and Graphites again helped temporarily bit Dysentery 1000, d.u., cured not only the hands but also radically improved the vitality.

The symptoms upon which I selected it were the appearance of the eruption, pain in the hands preventing sleep; if a finger is hit a little the pain “hits the heart”; the whole condition worse in damp weather, especially snow air and winter dampness; and rapid weakness after the second reaction from Graphites. He gets a bad taste four or five hours after eating; sluggish, lazy gait, so unlike him, feels all run down, drowsy and dazed. Suddenly tired while working. Rapid onset of weakness following the Graphites amelioration and his phrase “hits the heart” were what turned my attention to Dysentery.

Sudden weakness or faintness is often observed with Dysentery conditions; and an apparent Sulphur syndrome often needs comparison with Dysentery.

CASE II. Mrs. S., 70-odd, weight 208, with kidney insufficiency, decompensation of artery tension, albumin, sugar, old abdominal fibroid, aural polypi; in short, able to supply a goodly array of diagnostic and laboratory data, was feeling the effects of these plus her age.

On sight I was reminded of a remedy of which we made provings some year ago. One prover had taken the 30th of the drug every two hours for eleven days without apparent effect, then quickly succumbed and had a similar facies, a combination of bloatedness and haggardness, sleepy, dull appearance as of the aftermath of dissipation. Our interview confirmed the choice. Rambling ideas and talk; talks of her mother (dead), says her mother will help her with her work, talks of people doing various imaginary things around the neighborhood, acts childish, looks at one with feigned anger, makes odd faces. Craving hot drinks.

Back of head feeling “dead”, frozen; lips bluish, cold sweat when moving about, vomiting, difficult to evacuate urine and other symptoms; but the above, although not literal to the text of the proving, perhaps, is characteristic and has helped many times with similar states as well as other conditions. After being given scopalamine hydrobromide 200, d.u., she broker her vigil by sleeping all night, “wonderfully”.

The 200th again ten days later and the 1000th a month after that helped much. An old discharge from the ear reappeared. Then she had colicky pains and began passing gallstones, as if a return of an old symptom. Skinners Lycopodium 30 and six weeks later Chelidonium 30 on classic symptoms freshened up the old lady remarkably, so energetic and appearing fifteen years younger. Our remedies help old people wonderfully. I hope the scopalamine provings (Cameron and Hayes) will be included in a dictionary or textbook sometime.

CASE III. Adaxukah. This is another of my pets. A proving may be found in the Homoeopathic Recorder for January, 1928.I would not want to be without it during the grippe season either for acute or chronic effects.

A very thin lady of 72 for whom a spinal ataxia had been arrested some eighteen or twenty years ago and brought up to an efficient and comfortable state had been troubled several years with nosebleeds. The bleeding seemed to come from a crusty condition in the nose although the epistaxis would come spontaneously at any time of day or night. The drier the crusts the worse and more frequent the nosebleeds. She was much disturbed at night by a copious postnasal albuminous discharge. Watery discharge from the anterior nares. Always very cold. Sleepiness, perhaps from the disturbed nights. No high tension. Adaxukah 1000 d.u., five months apart has at least done better than any previous remedy, loosening the crusts, preventing epistaxis and making her “feel real well” during the last eight months.

Here is a change for criticism, perhaps.

WATERBURY, CONN.

DISCUSSION.

DR. FARRINGTON: Dr. Hayes always brings us something new from some corner or the materia medica that we are not familiar with.

scopalamine is a powerful drug, and given in appreciable doses will do a lot of harm. In oversensitives it sometimes causes a great commotion. Several years ago I had a lady patient of about forty-five who went to her oculist to have her eyes examined. He was busy with other patients and came out and instilled two or three drops of scopalamine into each eye, and he said, “Now sit here for a while until I can get to you, and by that time your pupils will be sufficiently dilated”.

DR. MOORE: That is probably half a grain to an ounce, Doctor.

DR. FARRINGTON: She sat there a few minutes. Her heart began to thump and she began to tremble, and thought she was going to die because of the oppression and dyspnoea.

I wish I could give you an accurate account of the symptoms that followed. I have a note of them in my Clarks Dictionary. I treated that woman for nine months before she was cured of the effects of those tiny doses of scopalamine.

The first remedy was Lachesis, which relieved, and it was given in various potencies. Finally Physostigma completed the cure; three doses of Physostigma 200, two hours apart, made her entirely well.

DR. MOORE: Physostigma has actually the opposite effect to scopalamine hydrobromide. I have used scopalamine hydrobromide for thirty years and have never seen any effect, and this is the reason, that every time it is put into the eye there is a little cloth ready and it is held there for three minutes. It doesnt absorb enough through the ocular tissues to produce any physical effect, but let a little bit of it go down through the nasal mucous membrane and you have something quite different.
