NEWS AND NOTES

NEWS AND NOTES. We may remind our readers that there are biographies of Dr. Skinner and of Dr. Burnett still in the hands of our publishers. The price of each is 2s. 6d. Each Life is a deeply important chapter in the history of the Homoeopathic Art and in addition to that it is full of practical teaching which should be familiar to all Homoeopaths young, old and students.

LABORATORY versus THE CLINIC.

LORD MOYNIHAN, whose supremacy in surgery none will dispute, occasionally talks nonsense when he strays into medical topics, but also he sometimes comes out with profound truths. In the address he delivered at the opening of the Winter Session of Guys Hospital in October last, he dealt with “Medicine in the Immediate Future” and naturally had something to say of the “Scientific” side of medicine as evolved in the Laboratory. Dr. F. J. Wheeler has sent us a copy of the Guys Hospital Gazette in which the address appears, and we reproduce these words of wisdom which Dr. Wheeler has very properly marked:.

What have laboratory workers done to help us in the recognition of such diseases as gastric or duodenal ulcer, infections of the gall-bladder and cholelithiasis, splenic anaemia, haemolytic jaundice, to mention some of the diseases with which I am very familiar? What could they do when such diseases do not exist apart from man, when only the “actual material for study is the human patient”?.

Lord Moynihan is quite right though he is not the first to discover the truth “diseases do not exist apart from man.” The fallacy of expecting to find diseases in pathological laboratories which deal only with the end products of disease should be apparent to everybody. But it is anything but apparent to “scientific researchers”.

ALUMINIUM COOKING VESSELS.

DR. CHARLES T. BETTS, whose letter appears in our present issue, has been for years investigating this subject and has written many books and pamphlets on it. In his letter to us he encloses a letter from Mrs. Grace Daugherty, of Toledo, Ohio, giving her experience with the metal. It is so graphic that we reproduce it subjoined:.

The writer wishes to inform the many sufferers of stomach trouble “her experience with the real cause.” I was a sufferer from stomach trouble for many years and tried various remedies. Only temporary relief was obtained from any of the so-called remedies. My discovery as to the cause of my trouble came about in a peculiar way I had been wearing an aluminium upper plate of teeth, made by a prominent dentist and was also using aluminium cooking utensils at the same time. After wearing the plate about two years, my mouth and throat began to get sore and my stomach was all out of order.

Later on a sore came on my upper lip. My mouth and the sore annoyed me so, I went to the doctor to know the cause of it. He looked at my mouth and throat and said the trouble was from the stomach. I asked him if he thought the aluminium plate could possibly have anything to do with the condition of my mouth. He said “No.” He didnt think so, that after my stomach trouble was relieved, my mouth would get all right again. As time went on, I got no relief from stomach trouble and the sore on my lip did not heal either, but was getting worse all the time.

It dawned upon me all at once that the aluminium plate I was wearing and the aluminium cooking utensils I was using were the whole cause of my trouble. Every one knows how hard it is to keep aluminium ware clean especially when alkali foods are cooked in them. The same applied to my aluminium pate I wore. This experience caused me to discard all aluminium utensils in my home. Also my plate was cast aside for a rubber one.

In a short time the results were gratifying indeed my general health became better. Stomach trouble disappeared after years of torture from the poison contained in the aluminium.

ALUMINIUM AND CANCER.

IN an important article by Dr. A.H. Grimmer on “The Application of Homoeopathic Remedies to Cancer Cases,” read at the I.H.A. Bureau of Clinical Medicine in June last, and published in the Homoeopathic Recorder of November, a reference is made to many causes of irritation which may set up cancer. Among others Dr. Grimmer names “Aluminium poisoning coming from the use of Aluminium cooking utensils and from Aluminium plates in the mouth.” Dr. Grimmer finds the best homoeopathic antidotes to these effects in the Cadmiums.

SECALE FOR ENURESIS NOCTURNA.

THE following letter appeared in the British Medical Journal of December 6th:.

NOCTURNAL INCONTINENCE IN CHILDREN.

SIR, In regard to Dr. Pereira Grays memorandum in your issue of November 29th, I have found ergot the only satisfactory drug in many cases of this distressing disorder. The liquid extract in five-minim doses to a child of five years, combined with half the quantity of liquorice and a drop of peppermint, often brings about permanent relief in a fortnight, and is worth a trial in most patients so afflicted. The prescription was published some years ago, and it is at last beginning to find its way into the text-books, where belladonna and the bromides reigned for a century in masterly inactivity. I am, etc.

This is a valuable experience and in spite of the addition of liquorice and peppermint we have no doubt Secale was the curative agent. It has many symptoms of paresis of the bladder, including Enuresis, as the Materia Medica shows.

ECHINACEA.

WE are fortunate in having several brilliant papers from across the Atlantic and only regret that our space will not allow us to get them all in one number. Dr. Rabe has sent us an article on “Remedy Selection” and Dr. Jervis one on a Veterinary subject. Dr. George Royals paper on Echinacea is a notable piece of clinical observation, insight and presentment. When we have completed Dr. Royals story of the remedy we shall perhaps have something of our own to add.

SKINNER AND BURNETT.

DR. SKINNERS Grand Characteristics will be ready almost as soon as this issue of the “HOMOEOPATHIC WORLD.” Orders may be received any time. It is published at 2s., and 2s. 6d. if interleaved. On the reception it meets with from the Homoeopathic public depends whether more of the kind is produced or not.
