This book is a worthy follower of the many interesting volumes Mr. Ellis Barker has written on chronic diseases and their treatment by natural methods of healing, and we trust it will not be the last will and testament from his able pen.

IT is always of greatest interest to discover “how the other fellow does it”. In factories and workshops the trade secrets are carefully guarded so that the rivals of the business do not discover the secrets and steal the thunder.

Mr. Ellis Barker is the very opposite; he opens the doors of his consulting rooms wide, in fact he invites everybody in and lets us into the innermost secrets of his well-deserved success.

One is struck with the meticulous care he takes in getting the co-operation of his patients, how he hunts after the elusive cause of the trouble and is not content with superficial, obvious causes.

One is struck with the great knowledge he has of nature cure; and how he can always give chapter and verse for his theories on diet. And they are not theories any more; they have been proved to be correct in the hard school of everyday practice. He is a true follower of the teachings of Hahnemann who insisted that all the facts of a case should be taken into consideration and all the faults should be corrected before even the diagnosis or the prescription was made.

And the tremendous knowledge of out of the way remedies which are being presented to the interested reader! There is no sticking to just a few polychrests, and a rigid adherence to one or two favourite potencies, the choice is varied and catholic, the mother tincture is given as freely as the higher and highest potencies of the nosodes, his knowledge of the homoeopathic pharmacopoeia is extensive; and he certainly has made good use of his homoeopathic library, his Boericke, his Kent, his Clarke and the rest.

I am a great believer in heredity. The mantle of Mr. Ellis Barkers father has certainly fallen on him and he has carried on the tradition of Hippocrates, in doing the utmost for his patients to the best of his knowledge. And the men and women he sent back cured to take up again the burden of life were certainly such as according to the tenets of orthodox medical knowledge were incurable. They are grateful to him with good reason.

I have read “The Testament of Healing” and the only regret I had was that there was not more of it.

James Ellis Barker 1870 – 1948 was a Jewish German lay homeopath, born in Cologne in Germany. He settled in Britain to become the editor of The Homeopathic World in 1931 (which he later renamed as Heal Thyself) for sixteen years, and he wrote a great deal about homeopathy during this time.
