by means of a drug-disease given to prevent, or forestall a natural disease of similar symptoms, was one of the earliest discoveries of Hahnemann, some 135 years ago.
Following on, Homoeopathy, in the hands of its most enlightened followers, has, for the last 100 years been using not only substances capable of evoking a similar disease, but also actual disease matter, changed by preparation till innocuous, to protect from the same disease. Burnett was hot on the trail, and discusses the subject as it appeared to him in 1884, when the published his “Vaccinosis and Thuja”, whose reasoning in regard to “Homoeoprophylaxis” appears in this number.
It has been very interesting to observe that Old School has also, of late years, been “arriving”; BUT, and it is a very big “but”.
Homoeopathy has employed, successfully, the disease, whether natural or artificial (i.,e. the drug-disease), in potentized form, and given by the mouth. Old School, blundering after, always buying its experience at the costliest-and too often at the expense of the sick, – has used “materia doses” – the largest it dare give not the smallest that are effective: and instead of employing mere power, mass being eliminated, it injects even the actual germs, – even living germs – so many to a dose: injects them, to insure their getting in.
Injections have always seemed to us a mean and cowardly way of sneaking in through natures defences. One might consider injection, perhaps, if potentized drugs did not get in – but they do.
But “surely drugs may get neutralized or destroyed if taken but the mouth; if not by saliva, by gastric juice.” As a matter of fact, potentized drugs do not. Hahnemann proved that over a hundred years ago. Potentized drugs are so changed that they are no longer subject to chemical laws, or to the laws of neutralization. If it were not so, how could we carry phosphorus about in our little cases, confident that it preserves all its healing properties?
How could we carry a dozen drugs in little bottles in a case, knowing them to be safe from interference with one another. That eminent scientist, Dr. W. Boyd, of Glasgow, has demonstrated all this. “Ah, but they are in glass bottles and stoppered!” Alas for the argument! potentized drugs pass freely through glass. There is no need even to uncork them for the purposes of observations and experiment.
Hahnemann has much yet to teach physicists-chemists-physicians. He demands no blind following. Only, repeat the experiment, he urges.
In regard to drugs given by the mouth, it was interesting to read the suggestive observations of a doctor who wrote to a Medical Journal the other day, saying that a certain drug, “given by the mouth” had actually been discovered in the spinal fluid. Presently Old School may take heart, and adopt the safer way?.
FROM THE RECORDER, MAY 1938.
THE following appeared in the Journal of the A.M.A, February 26th, 1938, pages 630:.
The finding of the drug (Sulfanilamide) in spinal fluid in only slightly lower concentration than in blood within a few hours of administration by mouth suggests that the drug may be given by mouth when its presence in the spinal fluid is desired.
They who hunger and thirst after scientific statements are invited to read and re-read the above until they thoroughly digest it and realize its full import. Its a tough break for the hypodermic syringe and for intravenous and intraspinal medication.
According to this no matter how you give a drug it gets there just the same, clear into the spinal fluid “in only slightly lower concentration than in blood”.
In our opinion the sue of the “needle” is perfectly devilish and direct intraspinal medication is whatever you want to call it. The syringe is generally loaded for big game and it brings them down too often for social security under a compulsory health insurance programme. Anybody may get a shot in the arm or elsewhere if the go-getters once get going.
What are the facts? Oral administration of medicinal substances is effective and much safer than other methods or routes.
The value of the hypodermic is psychological. Its potential for harm is tremendous.
The potentized remedy should always be given by mouth. Reaction will be prompt and decisive IF the remedy is homoeopathic to the case. No other mode of administration will enhance the value of the prescription in the least degree.
Centuries of progress we trust will lead us back at last to simpler and saner methods of diagnosis and treatment. We have them now, but only the few know and still fewer really practice THE TRUE ART OF HEALING .
The specific action of a medicament has no resemblance to chemical or physical phenomena; and therefore the theory of “small doses” can neither be supported nor controverted by a reference to such phenomena. Medicinal influence is not produced by the action of portions of dead matter upon each other, it is the result of an operation upon living organized tissues. Nor is this all: two factors are necessary to the success of a specific remedy-one is the presence of a living organism in a state of disease, and the other is the homoeopathicity of a remedy to that disease.
Much of the ridicule which has been pointed at the system of small doses has emanated from those who have ignorantly taken it for granted, that the operations of a medicine within the human body are guided alone by some physical or chemical law: they have, therefore, attributed to an infinitesimal quantity of a drug, the mere force which it would display if brought in contact with other matter in the test tube of the chemist: they have forgotten, or have refused to take into consideration, the important influence of the vital principle. – Homoeopathic Review, 1858.
WHAT IS THE MINIMUM DOSE?.
The minimum dose is always the smallest amount that will bring about a reaction of the vital energy on the dynamic plane. It is based on the law of Maupertius, the French mathematician, which has been fully accepted by scientists, that “the quantity of action necessary to effect any change in nature is the least possible; according to this principle the decisive moment is always a minimum, an infinitesimal”. When applied to therapeutics the least possible or the highest potency, sufficient to bring about reaction, would be homoeopathic. – Recorder.
